I am not ashamed to admit that Mary Poppins is one of my favorite movies. I watch it a few times a year and still find it just as magical and powerful as ever. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1964 movie. I was excited that Disney decided to commemorate the golden anniversary with a film. The movie, Saving Mr. Banks, tells the story of how Walt Disney convinces Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers to allow him to make the movie despite the fact that was adamantly against it. The result is a very beautiful and poignant story that I enjoyed a great deal. Tom Hanks played a jovial and convincing Walt Disney, while Emma Thompson shined as the troubled and crass Travers. I walked away from the film with a completely different understanding of my beloved movie. It really blessed my soul!
